in the congress with the white house. >> senator john mccain estimates the price tag if sequestration happens and the pentagon needs to reimburse contractors for severance cost could be $4 billion. in a letter to defense secretary leon panetta, mccain says he plans to deny any transfer of money that could have been avoided by complying with the law. brett? >> bret: stay on it. thank you. brick shipyard workers clashed with police after they forced their way into the defense ministry compound. more austerity protest elsewhere in athens. rallies against proposals that would cut salaries and personnel. >>> one world leader plans on turning 60 in style. you simply will not believe al gore's excuse for president obama's performance at the debate. grapevine is next >> bret: now some fresh pickings from the political grapevine. we've looked at the presidential debate from a number of different angles since it ended. and so have the other networks, of course. as we told you earlier, pundits and polls seem to agree that president obama lost the debate to governor romney. governor romney having a good

52.8 million people watched the first debate between senator john mccain and then senator obama four years ago. 80% of the country's adults reported watching at least some of the presidential debates in 2008. >>> enough of the real news, let's huddle up around the water cooler to get you ready for the rumble in the rockies. aides to president obama said he's focusing on looking calm. romney's team says it is loading up the candidate with zingers, one-liners aim the at the president. the campaign told "the new york times" last week, quote, mr. romney's team has concluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. the zinger strategy apparently includes luring president obama into appearing smug or evasive in his responses, especially on questions of the economy. this is where jimmy fallon comes in. >> tomorrow is the first of three debates between myself and president obama. i'm looking forward to having a serious conversation with my opponent about the issues. i've always pre

? what makes you angry as to john mccain? what is said of archer has been issuing to shout from the mountain tops is not true. >> it was one of the most moving moments in my life, to come across that bridge with this group of kids i've never met before, but we were all together. and that is the sense you get here at the parade, where the president is going to review the parade. they sent the family, the country coming together. that is the people are looking for a think. >> i would love to do you have no idea which are talking about, but everybody here kept their emotions thoroughly and check, i'd be lying to you, my friend. >> we are hoping to find you a reflective mood on a cloudy day. we're at first to speak to you coming off your summer vacation. how does it recharge you? what you think about? what do you see, what you read about? how are you thinking about your job these days? >> already. there there you have it. our four finalists. now ladies and gentlemen, you are going to vote with everything that your disposal. it will make noise, noise, noise, noise, the most toys wins

his watch looking bored. bush said he was waiting for the night to be over. john mccain took heat as he tried to portray barack obama as a washington insider. >> an energy bill loaded down with goodies. it was sponsored by bush and cheney. you know who voted for it, that one. you know who voted against it, me. >> of course, sometimes it is not what you say but what you do that gets you in trouble. go back to 1960. vice president richard nixon had recently gotten over a bout with an infection that left him looking shaky. kennedy looked healthy and strong. when kennedy won nearly half said the debate played a role in the decision. al gore was criticized for sighing and rolling his eyes while debating george bush in 2000. and then capped it off with this moment. >> it is not what your philosophy and position on issues but can you get things done. and i believe i can. >> that's funny. i'm sorry. you hear this next one repeated many times. it came from ronald reagan during his debate with jimmy carter. reagan posed a simple question. >> are you better off than you were four years ago?

% of the asian american vote compared to 35% for john mccain, according to the exit polls. is there any chance of that kind of a landside for president obama this time around, or is there too much of a juxtaposition between the immigration issue and the economy? >> no, i think it's very possible. i mean, there's certainly an old way and a new way of engaging voters and the president's campaign has certainly started very early, engaging asian american and pacific islanderers voters and he's also created a whole new sort of stage for asian americans in his administration. he's appointed more to the cabinet level, has record num r numbers in his administration, record number appointed to federal benches. and right now you see the romney campaign, they are trying to make inroads into this constituency, primarily by focusing on small business issues. and i think there's real choice in front of asian american voters right now. what we are seeing in all of our polling is that asian americans are most likely going to vote at levels that are even greater than at 2008, in part because they're more vote

. but douglashall john mccain's former policy adviser says the same thing in a story this morning. elaine child the former george w. bush's labor secretary said the same thing. so serious republicans who understand that these are two totally different surveys, they sort of understand the process and the way bls works there's not really a conspiracy here. >> can i ask you? you've been around d.c. for a long time. has anyone ever questioned this number, any reason to be suspicious of the integrity of it? >> i don't think so. you heard what jared said earlier. you heard what all the other folks say. i love that little line that jared had that they don't let the jan tors take out the garbage until after the numbers are released. it's funny. remember last month when the rather weak unemployment numbers came out, president obama knew them, knew what the numbers would be when he was giving a speech at the democratic convention because the president gets to know the day before when his council of economic advisers chairman takes a piece of paper over and tells him. he knew those numbers when he was giv

them back to reality. >> senator john mccain is the only man who has debated both of these individuals. he weighed in on the expectations this morning. take a listen. >> serve and provide us -- >> it's not just that they go bankrupt, he doesn't understand -- >> comments that grabbed everybody's attention. because frankly, the candidates are too well prepared. they're well scripted. >> what you did not hear the beginning there, is the senator said i think you're going to see more viewers, than any debate in history. and then he also said he can't remember the last time that any of these things affected the outcome of a presidential race. save 1960 and 2000, have the debates ever really impacted the outcome of a race, chris kofinis? >> it's funny, i hear the debate about debates not necessarily mattering. and i actually disagree with that i think the 1980, the reagan/carter debate. the debates mattered. they matter in every election, they either reinforce a narrative in the election meaning we think we're going to vote for president obama. president obama does well in that debate and it
